307294 - Common Solutions for Windows Messenger Account Logon Problems
using the Netgear DG834G and AOL Platinum
I can log on with AOL9 but not with MS IE 6 or Outlook Express unless I go through a dialup modem
Signing In Through a LAN
Signing In Through a Firewall or a NAT
Windows Messenger is configured to run whenever you turn on your computer. When you connect to the Internet, Windows Messenger automatically connects to its server, even from behind a firewall or a network address translation (NAT). Windows Messenger first tries to connect directly so that you can use its full functionality. If Windows Messenger cannot connect directly, it uses the same HTTP connection that your default browser uses to connect to the Internet.

Customers of AOL's high-speed Road Runner Internet service cannot access some Microsoft Web sites, including Hotmail and MSN
A glitch is preventing a significant number AOL Time Warner's Road Runner customers from using the high-speed Internet service to connect to certain Microsoft Web sites.
The problem, which cropped up on Tuesday morning, is ongoing and prevents customers from accessing a number of Microsoft sites, including Hotmail email and the MSN portal, according to a Road Runner representative and reports from readers. "

A frame is a single unit of transportation on the data link
layer. It consists of header data plus data which was passed
down from the network layer (e.g. an IP datagram) plus
sometimes trailer data.
An Ethernet (V2) frame has a MTU of 1500 bytes but the size of
the frame can be up to 1526 bytes (22 byte header, 4 byte CRC
trailer)."

America Online has become my favourite ISP in UK and I use AOL for chat and as a BBS.

BT scandal
=====================================
I am logging on to AOL by 56k modem these days
because my Platinum Broadband is delayed for a week
The POTs copper and the modem banks supplied and maintained by BT are in very very poor condition
started today at 11 000 bps - and after logging on and off a couple of times finally got connected at 21600 bps - yesterday it was 19 100 bps mostly
At that speed gmail is almost unusable,
and fallouts of the connection occur all too often.
and even google shows as a 404 now and then.
When I wa stelephoning 0800 help lines in Waterford
(AOL Broadband 0800 376 4406)
and Bangalore (AOL sevices 0800 376 542)
got the usual reinstall nonsense - I know my set up is OK
bcause I was on AOL by tcp ip last week from Denmark by "bring your own access"
more Google Search: "bring your own access" site:co.uk
And on 151 BT engineers tested my line to the exchange 0121 770 and said it was fine
chatting with the last even the BT staff only get on at 33 000 bps at home
- but they seldom use internet - being in front of a computer all day at work takes the fun away:-(
My experience of "birmingham cable" site:co.uk AKA TeleWest was very much better - a new telephone instalation, coupled to cable tv, meant I got connected by modem at 52 000 kbs
The best news was that BT on 151 could tell me that MY broadband instalation had been started with 3 working days to go - and that was their excuse for the poor connecion speed - a patch cable ?

Who's No. 2?
By Patricia Fusco
There is no doubt that America Online Inc. is the largest Internet community in the U.S., providing content through outsourcing services to some 20 million subscribers.
Unfortunately, determining who's No. 2 and No. 3 isn't nearly as easy. So how exactly does the Internet industry measure up?
According to NUA Ltd. of Ireland, the art of estimating how many Internet users are online throughout the world is an inexact science at best. Surveys abound, using all sorts of measurement parameters. After years of studying Internet usage reports, NUA arrives at an "educated guess" as to how many people are online worldwide. continues

I want to add the keywords America on Line to see if the
Ads by Goooooogle can pick up a more relevant link
What does 'Ads by Google' mean?
It means that Google uses search-based technologies to match advertisements to the content and context of web pages - so the ads you see are related to the information you are viewing. The ads come from Google's base of AdWords advertisers. These advertisers range from global brand name companies to small local businesses.
• Google AdWords - Advertise with Google and drive traffic to your site
• Google AdSense - Place Google ads on your site and earn more money
I think the reason google dropped the previous compulsory system for the blogs,
is the question of copyright and fair use which now rests squarely on my shoulders now.
I am not making any money so don't sue me - BUT if I am an unfair user of your writings email me and I will correct or delete the post.
At least any post here will have a link to your site and increase your google ratings

In 1709, hundreds of Palatine refugees from the Rhineland had been driven from their homes by famine and religious persecution. Therefore, they sought refuge in England. Under the Swiss Baron Christopher de Graffenreid, some of these people were settled on the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers in North Carolina."
Germanna, First Colony of 1714
The 1714 Colonists did not leave their homes in Germany not knowing their destination, nor were they compelled to do so. They were engaged to perform a specific job in Virginia for Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood, knew where they were going, and what they were to do. They came from one of the thriftiest and most intelligent provinces of Germany. They were master mechanics, and were an intelligent, progressive set of people.
Google Search: Germanna Colonist
Germanna history
Believing he could pursue the dual objectives of colonization and silver, Graffenried agreed to lead the several hundred Germans and a smaller contingent of Swiss to North Carolina.
The silver mining was pursued by hiring Johann Justus Albrecht to purchase tools and to recruit German miners.
To find the miners, Albrecht went to Siegen where there were iron mines. Graffenried thought that the North Carolina colony could be set up rather quickly and then he could devote his attention to the silver mines in Virginia.
Graffenried's company had obtained the english Queen's approval for land in Virginia for a Swiss colony. There was no intention now to use Swiss citizens since the German miners were to live there.
Essentially, the common characteristic was that they lived on the east side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The name Germanna Colonist is used because it was appropriate for the first of the Germans.
